    Women's Stories of Hemorrhagic Stroke

Sharon Dale Stone is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at Lakehead University. As an activist and academic, she is committed to giving voice to groups of people whose experiences are marginalized in mainstream society.

This focus has been at the top of her agenda since her days as an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto, when she started doing research into lesbian identity and experiences. This led to the publication of Lesbians in Canada, a collection based on interviews and first-person accounts.

In the late 1980s, she began paying more attention to the newly emerging field of disability studies and started research and writing in this area. Since then, she has published widely on the many issues facing women with disabilities, particularly on the issue of visible versus invisible disabilities. It is her hope that her research will lead to a better understanding of the social dynamics surrounding these disabilities, which in turn will increase awareness of the significance of disability in society.
