Faces of Feminism
A Photo Documentation
by Pamela Harris

"It's an inspiring, unpretentious, and poignant collection ... A breathtaking document..."
NOW magazine

A beautiful collection documenting the contemporary women's movement in Canada. For six years Pamela Harris traveled from coast to coast researching and photographing hundreds of individual women and feminist organizations. The exhibition of these images has appeared in galleries across the country, unanimously receiving rave reviews. Faces of Feminism is a testament to the work and struggle of women fighting for social justice and equality.

Composed of a series of eighty black and white portraits with accompanying text, this important book showcases the faces and voices of women from many walks of life: rural and urban women, individuals and collectives, women of different races, ages and lifestyles. Elegantly designed, with duotone reproduction on quality paper stock, Faces of Feminism is an empowering reflection of the diversity and grassroots energy of the women's movement.

About the Author   Pamela Harris was born in 1940 and was educated in California, graduating with a degree in English literature. She took up photography in the 1960s and over time, her work became increasingly preoccupied by feminist themes. Faces of Feminism became Harris's major photographic project of the mid-1980s. The project developed into a cross-Canada project to photograph women of all walks of life who had participated in the women's movement in some way or another. Harris received the Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography (Canada Council) in 1990. She holds dual Canadian-American citizenship.
