Female Gazes
helps us to reclaim the art of seventy-five European and
North American women. A collection of work done by artists
in Canada, Europe, the United States and Mexico, this lavishly
produced book offers wonderful examples of the contribution
women have made to the visual arts in many media, from the
Renaissance to the present. Rich and fascinating stories
of this diverse group of women artists are complemented
by discussions of their art, an introductory essay on women
in the arts and vivid full-colour reproductions.
Included are artists from various cultural
communities -- Daphne Odjig, Bessie Harvey and June Clark,
emerging artists Jamelie Hassan and Nicole Jolicoeur, along
with such familiar names as Emily Carr, Judy Chicago, Joyce
Wieland and many others. Female Gazes
is an affordable and beautiful artbook that introduces the
challenges and triumphs of women artists to a broad audience.
About the Authors: Elizabeth Martin
