Roads Unravelling
Short Stories
by Kathy-Diane Leveille
"Leveille observes the ties and binds of working class lives in lucidly evoked rural settings ... keenly observed and full of sensual presence."
— The Globe and Mail
"... emphasizes how much our families, and where we are from, can shape the way we are. ... a fine read."
— The Globe and Mail
"The house was gone, burned down long ago. The clothesline pole leaned drunkenly. The root cellar had caved in, and the outbuildings looked ready to follow suit. The barn was a hollow-eyed shell. Fireweed, ragwort and thistles overran the gardens.... Willa knew everything about the farm there was to know. It was boring, simple as that. A trap."
In this unflinching, yet luminous collection of eight short stories, Kathy-Diane Leveille explores how the past won't let go, how it shapes our future as well as our present. In portraits full of heart and depth, Leveille excavates the narrow stereotypes we have of rural life, offering instead the complexity and grit of rural culture. Set in the Maritimes and rooted in working-class experience, Roads Unravelling depicts the lives of ordinary women as they grapple with the mysteries as well as the absurdities of adulthood.
