Watch for our exciting Spring 2008 list!

We are well underway with plans for delivering an abundant spring bouquet of books from Sumach!

We have an exceptional lineup of books by and about women's lives for Spring 2008. Our first is a debut by a long-time contributor to the cultural life of Toronto: screenwriter, playwright, poet and short-fiction writer Nila Gupta. The Sherpa and Other Fictions is a beautifully poetic and insightful collection of inter-related contemporary short stories set in both North America and in the troubled war-torn region of Jammu and Kashmir. The Sherpa and Other Fictions will have a fabulous launch party, complete with a specially-commissioned dance piece performed by Puja Amin, Artistic Director of Sanskriti Arts. Be sure to watch our events page for further details on this exciting event.

Our Women's Issues Publishing Program presents Branding Miss G__: Third Wave Feminists and the Media, a critique of the methodologies of the third wave feminist group "The Miss G__ Project for Equity in Education," whose objective is instituting women's studies curricula in high schools. Author Michelle Miller, who is a member of the Miss G__ Project, takes a fresh look at how the group is engaging with the media, and how their strategies are being received. Thought-provoking and informative, the book is a must-have for those interested in the advancement of women in education and the pitfalls inherent in trying to gain media attention for feminist issues.

Sumach books for Young Adults are smart, quirky and powerful, dealing with contemporary issues concerning the real lives of girls – often glossed over in mainstream media. Our young adult books have won much critical acclaim, together with many important Canadian and international awards. We don't doubt that our Spring 2008 offering, Watching July by BC author Christine Hart, will garner similar attention. Set in the British Columbia Interior, Watching July follows the life of sixteen year-old July MacKenzie as she adjusts to the transition from urban Vancouver to small-town life after the abrupt death of her mother. Unresolved events surrounding her past, and the struggle to handle a romantic relationship that is quickly becoming abusive, come together in unforeseen ways that bring July to a pivotal moment in her life.
